Pure carbon under pressure
Diamond is a single element, carbon, arranged so that every atom bonds to four neighbors in a rigid three-dimensional network. That structure is why it is the hardest natural material and why it conducts heat better than any other bulk substance at room temperature, which is how testing pens tell real diamond from most imitations.
Natural diamonds form in the mantle at roughly 150 kilometers deep and are carried up fast in kimberlite eruptions. Most are one to three billion years old, far older than the rock they are found in. The classic sources are southern Africa, Russia, Canada, Botswana, and Australia's now-closed Argyle mine, which produced most of the world's pink stones.
Hardest does not mean unbreakable
Diamond has perfect cleavage in four octahedral directions, and cutters have used that fact for centuries to split rough with a single tap. The same property means a diamond can chip or split from an ordinary knock at the wrong angle, particularly at a sharp culet or an exposed corner on a princess cut.
Practically, diamond wears extremely well, but it is not indestructible and should still come off for heavy work. It also attracts grease strongly, which is why a worn ring looks dull long before it is damaged. Warm water with a drop of dish soap and a soft toothbrush restores it. Ultrasonic cleaning is fine for most stones but not for anything with a significant feather reaching the surface, or for fracture-filled diamonds.
Lab-grown and what changed
Lab-grown diamonds, made by high pressure high temperature or chemical vapor deposition, are chemically and optically the same material rather than a simulant. Only a lab can separate them reliably, using growth features and fluorescence patterns. They now cost a fraction of mined stones and that gap keeps widening.
Simulants are a different thing entirely. Cubic zirconia and moissanite look similar to an untrained eye but are different substances, and moissanite in particular gives itself away by throwing far more rainbow flash than diamond does. If provenance matters to you, ask for a grading report from a recognized laboratory and check whether the stone is described as natural or laboratory grown.
Practice and pairings
Diamond is the April birthstone and is linked to Aries, Taurus, and Leo. In traditional practice it is associated with clarity, durability, and commitment, and it is described as amplifying rather than adding, which means the tradition also warns against wearing one during a bad period on the reasoning that it strengthens whatever is already running.
The chakra association is the crown. It pairs with clear quartz as an affordable stand-in for the same qualities, with sapphire for a combination framed around steady judgment, and with ruby when the pairing is meant to cover both resolve and warmth. Given the cost, most people encounter diamond as jewelry rather than as a working stone, and its meaning tends to attach to the occasion it marked.
