Reading Your Human Design Bodygraph
Human Design blends astrology, the I Ching, the Hindu-Brahmin chakra system, and the Kabbalah into a single diagram called the bodygraph. It looks nothing like a round natal chart. Instead you get a body-shaped map of nine centers, connected by channels, activated by gates that come from the exact positions of the planets at your birth. This calculator reads those positions and tells you your Type, Strategy, and Authority.
The two calculations behind your chart
Every bodygraph is built from two sets of planetary positions, not one. The first, printed in black, is your Personality. It uses the planets at your exact birth moment, the same data an astrologer uses. The second, printed in red, is your Design. It is calculated for roughly 88 days before birth, when the Sun had moved exactly 88 degrees of arc back from its birth position. That prenatal moment is thought to correspond to the formation of the body and its unconscious wiring.
So when you look at your chart you are seeing two people layered on top of each other. The black gates are what you consciously identify with, the traits you would list if someone asked you to describe yourself. The red gates are your body's operating system, running whether you notice it or not. Other people often see your red side more clearly than you do. When a gate is colored in from both sides, that theme is doubly reinforced and tends to be a defining feature of your life.
The nine centers and what they govern
The traditional chakra system has seven centers. Human Design splits two of them and works with nine. Each governs a domain of life. The Head is inspiration and mental pressure. The Ajna is conceptualizing and certainty. The Throat is communication and action. The G Center holds identity, love, and direction. The Heart or Ego is willpower and self-worth. The Sacral is life-force energy, work, and sexuality. The Spleen is intuition, health, and survival instinct. The Solar Plexus is emotions and moods. The Root is stress, drive, and adrenaline.
What matters most is whether a center is defined or undefined. A defined center is colored in, and it works consistently. It is a fixed part of who you are, radiating that energy outward. An undefined or open center is white, and it is where you take in and amplify the energy of the people around you. Open centers are not weaknesses. They are where you become wise over time, because you sample so many versions of that energy. They are also where you are most likely to absorb pressure that is not yours, which is why an open Solar Plexus person can walk into a tense room and suddenly feel anxious for no reason of their own.
Your Type is the headline
Type is determined by which centers are defined and how they connect to the Throat. There are five. Generators, roughly seven in ten people, have a defined Sacral and are built to respond to work and life that lights them up. Manifesting Generators are Generators with a fast, multi-tasking motor and a shortcut to action. Projectors have no defined Sacral and are here to guide and manage the energy of others, but only when they are recognized and invited. Manifestors, a small minority, are here to initiate and get things moving without waiting for anyone. Reflectors are the rarest, with no defined centers at all, sampling and mirroring their whole community like a lunar barometer.
Each Type has a Strategy, which is the correct way to engage with life so you meet less resistance. Generators and Manifesting Generators are meant to wait to respond rather than initiate cold. Projectors wait for the invitation. Manifestors inform the people affected before they act. Reflectors wait a full lunar cycle of about 28 days before big decisions. The theme you feel when you are out of alignment is a useful signal. Generators feel frustration, Projectors feel bitterness, Manifestors feel anger, and Reflectors feel disappointment.
Authority tells you how to decide
If Strategy is about how you engage, Authority is about how you make correct decisions. The system argues that your mind, for all its cleverness, is not a reliable decision-maker for the big questions. Instead, a body-based Authority is assigned based on your definition. Emotional Authority, the most common, means you have a defined Solar Plexus and should never decide in the heat of the moment. You ride out the emotional wave first, checking how a choice feels across several days, because there is no truth in the now for you.
Sacral Authority belongs to Generators without emotional definition, who get an immediate gut sound, a yes or a no, in the moment a question is asked. Splenic Authority is a quiet, one-time intuitive hit that will not repeat itself. There are also Ego, Self-Projected, Mental, and Lunar authorities for rarer configurations. Reading your Authority correctly is arguably the single most practical thing this chart gives you, because it reframes indecision as a signal that you simply have not used your real decision-making process yet.
Gates, channels, and profile
The 64 gates map directly onto the 64 hexagrams of the I Ching. When a planet sits in a gate, it activates that gate's theme. When two gates on opposite ends of a channel are both activated, the channel completes and links two centers together, which is what actually creates definition. A single activated gate on its own is called a hanging gate, and it makes you magnetically drawn to people who carry its partner gate, because together you complete a circuit neither of you has alone.
Your Profile adds another layer. It comes from the lines, numbered one through six, of your Sun and Earth in both the Personality and Design calculations. A profile like 1/3 (Investigator/Martyr) learns through study and trial-and-error, while a 5/1 (Heretic/Investigator) is projected onto by others as a problem-solver. Profile describes the costume your Type wears through life, the way your purpose actually plays out in relationships and work.
Why exact birth time matters here
Human Design is extremely time-sensitive, more so than a sun-sign horoscope. The fastest-moving factors, the Moon and the personal planets, can shift gates within an hour or two, and a shift in a single gate can change whether a channel completes, which can change your definition, and in edge cases even your Type. Because the Design side is anchored to that 88-degree solar arc before birth, a rounding error in your birth time compounds across both calculations.
This calculator uses precise ephemeris positions rather than approximations, so if your birth time is accurate to the minute, your bodygraph will be too. If you only know your birth time roughly, treat the broad strokes, your open versus defined centers and your likely Type, as more reliable than the fine detail of individual gate lines. When in doubt, pull your birth certificate. The difference between a 2/4 and a 3/5 profile can rest on a few minutes.
Start with one thing, not the whole chart. Learn your Type and its Strategy, then practice your Authority on small choices for a couple of weeks. Notice whether waiting to respond, or riding out an emotional wave, actually reduces the friction in your days. Human Design is meant to be lived and tested, not just read once, so treat your bodygraph as an experiment you run on yourself.
