Queen of Pentacles

She sits in a flowering arbor, roses climbing over the frame above her head, and holds a large pentacle in her lap with both hands, gazing down at it the way you would look at a sleeping child. Her throne is carved with goat heads, fruit, and a winged cherub. Goats point to Capricorn, the earth sign of structure and long effort, and they are carved into the arms she is resting on.

In the lower right corner a rabbit is springing into the frame. Rabbits mean fertility and abundance, and Smith drew it wild and uncontained, in contrast to the Nine of Pentacles falcon, which is trained. The field around her is green and the mountains behind are soft rather than sharp. Everything in the frame is either growing or feeding something.

This Queen expresses love by handling things. Food, money, schedules, a spare room, a ride to the appointment. She is the most grounded of the four Queens and the least interested in talking about feelings when something can be done instead. In a person position she is often a mother figure, a manager who protects their team, or the friend whose house everyone ends up at.

The shadow is smothering and self-neglect, usually together. She can be the person who takes care of everyone and refuses help herself, or who uses provision as a way to stay needed. When she appears in a self position for someone who is exhausted, that is the reading, and the advice is to be on the receiving end for once.

In an advice position her counsel is nearly always physical and immediate: eat properly, sleep, sort the money out, tend to the house. Tarot rarely gets this practical and it is worth passing on directly.

In an outcome position she indicates security, comfort, and being looked after, which is a warm result for home and family questions. In a career slot she can point to work in care, food, property, teaching, or resource management. In a feelings position she suggests someone who wants to build a life with you rather than a romance about you.

With the Empress the nurturing doubles and pregnancy or a strongly domestic period is worth considering, depending on the question. With the Ten of Pentacles she is the anchor of a family and the reading widens to include several generations.

Next to the Five of Pentacles she is help arriving in material form. With the Queen of Swords you get two very different modes of care in the same spread, warmth and clarity, and the querent usually needs both. Beside the Nine of Pentacles the pair emphasizes a woman who built her own comfort and shares it.
