Venus Opposition Mars in Depth
Facing each other across the chart
One hundred eighty degrees between Venus and Mars is possible because Mars, orbiting outside Earth, can sit anywhere in the zodiac while Venus stays within forty eight degrees of the Sun. So a Venus-Mars opposition almost always means Mars was near its own opposition to the Sun, close to Earth and bright. Allow seven to eight degrees.
Oppositions polarize rather than blend. Where the square makes the two functions grind, the opposition makes them stare at each other, which is why this aspect is so consistently about other people. It needs a second party to complete the circuit.
Projection in the love life
The standard expression is a division of labor with a partner. One of you does the wanting and pursuing while the other does the receiving and refining, and both of you privately resent the role. Whichever end you identify with, you will keep meeting people who carry the other, and the relationship will feel electric and slightly unfair.
Reclaiming the far end is the work. If you are always the pursuer, practice being pursued and tolerate how uncomfortable it is. If you are always the one being chosen, choose someone out loud for once. The aspect settles noticeably once both ends are yours.
Not only romance
Business partnerships, creative collaborations, and close friendships show the same shape. You supply the taste and they supply the push, or the reverse, and the pairing outperforms either of you alone until the resentment builds. People with this opposition often have a track record of intense, productive partnerships that end badly at around the three year mark.
Writing down explicitly who decides what, early, before there is a conflict, is unglamorous and prevents a lot of that. Sport, dance, argument, and negotiation all draw on the same wiring, and they are the safest places to practice. Anything with a defined opponent and defined rules lets the opposition run at full strength without a relationship absorbing the cost.
Timing and the long view
Transiting Mars opposes natal Venus roughly every two years for about five days, and can stretch far longer around a Mars retrograde station. Those longer stretches usually deliver a specific person who embodies the opposite pole with unusual clarity. It is worth noticing rather than immediately acting on.
Over a lifetime this aspect tends to soften into range rather than resolution. Older people with it are often the ones who can genuinely see both sides of an attraction, which makes them unusually good counsel for friends in difficult relationships. Take this as material for reflection, not as relationship advice for a situation that needs a real conversation. Anything you decide during them is worth rechecking two weeks later when the other person is no longer standing in front of you.
